Oak
Ridge is among the few cities in the country where technology
for the information superhighway was already in place before
it became a common amenity. And access to high-speed networking,
inter-computer conversations and other information-based technologies
makes Oak Ridge telecommunications infrastructure a model
for the rest of the country.
All of this means that the technology required for today's
speed of business
– fiber optics, DSL, cable modems, wireless
and other technologies
– are readily available at a very low
cost.
Digital Crossing Networks, located nearby in Knoxville, is East Tennessee's
only world-class data center. With 16,000 square feet of secure, industrial-grade computer facilities and vendor neutral telecommunications, Digital Crossing Networks supports the nationwide mission critical operations and business continuity plans of over thirty-five of the region's leading corporations.
Utilities
Electricity
- The City of Oak Ridge purchases power directly from the
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), which has some of the
lowest power rates in the country.
- One of the nation's largest power suppliers, TVA generates
enough reliable power to supply even the most demanding industries.
Natural Gas
- Oak Ridge Utility District is the privately owned local
distributor.
- No tap or service charges are required, and rates depend
simply on the amount of gas used.
Water/Wastewater
- Capacity at the water treatment plant, operated by the
City of Oak Ridge, is 24-28 million GPD. Current
demand uses about half of that amount.
- The wastewater system, owned by the City of Oak Ridge,
uses up to 42" mains that connect the eastern and western
portions of the city and provides sufficient capacity for
industrial demand.
- Oak Ridge has 100% city sewer coverage with a treatment capacity of 10 million GPD, well above present demand.
