New Route to be Followed This Year
Christmas trees, music, marching bands, sparkling lights and many other holiday sights and sounds will all combine on Saturday, December 11 to make the theme of The Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce's annual Christmas Parade, "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas," come to life. Lots of Santa's elves are working hard to make sure the parade is a fun, beautiful and safe event for participants and spectators.
One of the most important things for participants and those who wish to view the parade to be aware of is that the time and parade route have changed. The parade will begin at 6:00 p.m., which is earlier than past years. The new parade route will travel from Corporate Center, on the corner of Lafayette and Laboratory Road, down Lafayette to the Oak Ridge Turnpike. It will continue west on the Turnpike to Oak Ridge High School. The judge's stand will be located in front of the Chamber.
Those participating in the parade will line up in the parking lot of Corporate Center, on the corner of Lafayette and Laboratory Road beginning at 4:00 p.m. Detailed information will be e-mailed to all who have registered an entry.
Parker Hardy, President and CEO of the Chamber said, "We are looking forward to another wonderful parade this year. The organizations and individuals who register for the parade put a lot of work into their entries and there are always some beautiful and fun floats. It's our pleasure to sponsor and coordinate this event."
Greta Ownby, Executive Vice President of the Chamber said, "The decision to change the route is something we had been considering for a long time for a number of reasons. The parade has outgrown the line up space we have available in the Chamber's parking lot and the high school's parking lot. Also, shutting down so much of the Turnpike, especially in front of the hospital, was a safety issue. The new route is exactly the same length as the old one and should still provide plenty of space for spectators to enjoy the parade."
The Chamber will be accepting entries through Monday, December 6. Entry forms are available on the Chamber's website: www.oakridgechamber.org.
Volunteer parade marshals are needed to make the parade a successful event. To volunteer, contact Greta Ownby at email@example.com or 483-1321.
The Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce is Four-Star Accredited Chamber of Commerce and the winner of the ACCE 2010 Chamber of the Year designation.
